At this year’s Anime Central Convention, attendees were given some exciting behind-the-scenes insights into the creation of Heavenly Delusion anime.
During Production I.G’s panel, the anime’s director Hirotaka Mori shared how the acclaimed video game The Last Of Us influenced the series’ art direction.
Mori, who is a fan of The Last Of Us, said that the game’s post-apocalyptic world and atmospheric visuals left a profound impact on him.
He was so captivated by the game’s art that he purchased its art book to use as a reference for the art direction of Heavenly Delusion.
The Last of Us is an action-adventure video game series and media franchise created by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The game series has received critical acclaim and has won numerous awards, including several Game of the Year recognitions; the first game has been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made, and the second won more than 320 Game of the Year awards. Games in the series are among the best-selling PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 games. As of January 2023, the franchise has sold over 37 million games worldwide.
Heavenly Delusion anime, produced by Production I.G, aired from April to June 2023.
The series was directed by Hirotaka Mori, with scripts written by Makoto Fukami, character designs handled by Utsushita of Minakata Laboratory, and music composed by Kensuke Ushio.
Heavenly Delusion is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masakazu Ishiguro. It has been serialized in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon since January 2018, with its chapters collected in 10 tankobon volumes as of February 2024.
