Voice actor Toru Furuya, who is known for his role as Sabo in One Piece and Yamcha in Dragon Ball series, has issued a public apology on his official X account on May 22, 2024, following an interview with Shukan Bunshun, admitting to a long-term affair with a fan and other serious misconduct.
In the statement, Furuya confessed to having an affair with a fan for four and a half years, which he ended in September 2023.
The voice actor revealed that he was drawn to the woman’s unwavering support and initiated contact with her, leading to the relationship.
During the course of the affair, he recounted an argument during which he impulsively raised his hand against the woman, an act he described as “lowest behavior as an adult and as a human being“.
He also disclosed that he had pressured her into having an abortion, a mistake he called unforgivable.
“I deeply wounded her both physically and mentally, and I am truly, truly sorry for this,” he added.
Furuya also extended his apology to his fans, acknowledging the disappointment and damage his actions have caused to his professional image and the characters he voices.
“I have betrayed the trust and support of my long-time fans, disappointed them, and tarnished the characters I have portrayed. I cannot apologize enough. I have also betrayed the trust of all parties involved and caused them significant trouble.“
He concluded the statement by pledging to spend the rest of his life making amends for his actions and declared his readiness to accept any punishment.
